Teach in high school?

Occasionally, I am in a position where I am meet someone and they ask what I do. I reply by explaining I’m a full time graduate student working towards my Ph.D. in mathematics. This is greeted by a variety of responses, one of which is,

“Oh, really. What do you want to do when you are done? Teach in high school?”

Yes, I have spent hundreds of dollars in exam fees and postage to apply to graduate school, sat two preliminary exams, completed all the coursework for my degree, passed my 6 hour oral examination, been farmed out for proctoring and teaching assignments, worked on papers published in peer-reviewed journals, and spent the last couple years working on research for my thesis all so that I can teach high school students how to solve 2x^2+3x+1=0.
